The Alz Stars took to the lanes at Capri Lanes on April 16, 2010 to help benefit Alzheimer patients and their families. Through the efforts of the staff at Capri Lanes, the Miami Valley Alzheimer’s Association, and the PBA professionals, the event raised over $10,000 in the inaugural effort. The fund-raising event kicked off a week of festivities for the PBA Dayton Classic.

The fundraiser paired sponsored teams with current Senior PBA Stars. The PBA professionals competing in the tournament included Bob Chamberlain, Tom Baker, Tom Carter, Dale Eagle, Bob Kelly, Sam Maccarone, Ron Mohr, Johnny Petraglia, Ron Profitt, Dave Soutar, and Wayne Webb.

The sponsorships levels were the Alz Star Team Level of $5,000, the Super Star Level of $2,500, the Champion Level of $1,500, the Celebrity Level of $1,000, and the Hall of Fame Level of $500. Mike Irwin and the staff at Capri Lanes treated the participants to a wonderful evening of festivities including two games of bowling, a prime rib dinner, a silent auction, raffle, and live music. The event was a huge success.

The sponsors for the competing teams were as follows:

Alz Star – Capri Lanes, Kettering Health Network, and Premier Partners.

Champion – New Page, WoodGlen Alzheimer’s Community and Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, WoodGlen Forget Me Not, Riverside Renegade, and Bowling Stones.

Celebrity – Hospice of Dayton, Orville Smith & Nick Manos Memorial, and Victory Lanes.

Hall of Fame – Chapter Champions, Chapter Hopefuls, Dayton Marriott, Greater Dayton USBC. Just For Laughs, KeyBank, The LeBron Team, 1040, Teradata Intelligence, and Wagner Insurance Agency.

The GDUSBC was represented by local Senior Champions Evelyn Fields, Paulette Hanselman, Craig Baker, John Papp, and Don Berry. Each of the bowlers had just completed winning titles in the local senior tournament and then they took their winning ways to this event and captured the inaugural title. Baker and Hanselman had the high scores in their respective divisions.

The Miami Valley Alzheimer’s Association has a very simple but demanding mission: To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Their vision is a world without Alzheimer’s.

What is Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer who first described it in 1906. It is defined as a progressive and fatal brain disease that affects more than 5 million Americans. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.

There is no current cure for Alzheimer’s.

Some other sad but true statistics regarding Alzheimer’s

Every 70 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s

It is estimated that 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s

One out of eight people over age 65 has Alzheimer’s

200,000 to 500,000 Americans younger than age 65 have Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States

Currently, there are no disease-modifying therapies

70% of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia live at home, cared for by family and friends

Almost 11 million Americans are caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or another dementia – approximately one out of three of these caregivers is over age 60

Direct and indirect care for those with Alzheimer’s amounts to more than $172 billion annually

By 2050, there could be as many as 19 million people with the disease

from PBA.com

Amateur Fero Williams Leads as PBA World Series of Bowling Gets Underway

Taylor, Mich. – 8/4/2009 (PBA.COM)

Former Team USA member Fero Williams of Fairfield, Ohio, averaged 239 for his 10 qualifying games Tuesday to roll into the lead after two rounds of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Motor City Open at Taylor Lanes.

Williams, a 28-year-old amateur and part-time computer tech, decided to bowl the first event in the PBA’s five-week World Series of Bowling “to see if I’m ready. Opportunities are dwindling for amateur bowlers. This is a test to see if I have the mental and physical abilities to compete at this level.”

Williams stood atop a field seeded with international talent. Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, was in second place with 2,340 pins, 50 behind Williams. Bill O’Neill of Southampton, Pa., was third at 2,271 pins followed by first round leader Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., and Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., at 2,267.

“It feels good to be where I’m at,” Williams confessed. “I have worked hard, practiced hard and today everything just clicked. I was nervous all day, and usually when I’m nervous, I bowl well. I hope I stay nervous tomorrow.”

Reinforcing the international flavor of the World Series was Colombia’s Andres Gomez who was tied for 11th place with 2,233 pins and Martin Larsen of Sweden in 13th with 2,229. Bowlers from 10 countries including the United States are represented in the field of 131 players.

After the complete field bowls a third five-game qualifying round Wednesday, the top 24 players will advance to match play Wednesday evening and Thursday to determine the top five players for the stepladder finals.
