Sectional Qualifier fields are determined by taking geographic distance, economics and field size into consideration.

The sectionals will consist of 32 Baker System games each day for a total of 64 Baker games. The top four teams based on total pinfall in each division following the completion of competition at each sectional will advance to the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.

In addition, these four locations will host qualifying for the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships on March 12. All participants will bowl six games with total pinfall determining final standings. The top four finishers in each division (men and women) at each Sectional Qualifier advance to the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, scheduled for May 16-18 at AMF Euless Lanes in Euless, Texas.

ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress projects the 2009-10 season to go on record as the largest period of individual growth in intercollegiate bowling history.

So far this season, USBC Collegiate has added 25 new schools to its roster of institutions fielding collegiate bowling teams. Those additions are expected to push USBC Collegiate’s total number of certified schools to 175, which would represent a 16.4-percent increase over the 152 schools that participated in 2008-09.

The current growth spurt has been felt across the country, but spikes have been seen in Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Viterbo University, located in Lacrosse, Wis., is among the schools that are newly-registered this season. Director of Athletics Barry Fried explains what prompted Viterbo’s decision to begin fielding bowling teams.

“One of the primary reasons we decided to add intercollegiate bowling was the increasing popularity of the sport,” Fried said. “It’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the country as 46 of 50 states have club or varsity bowling programs in high school. We felt the addition of bowling might give us a recruiting niche and help increase our enrollment.”

Currently, USBC Collegiate has approximately 2,775 registered bowlers in its program. That is nearly 150 more bowlers than it had last season and nearly 300 above its final number from 2007-08.

The current growth pattern can be attributed to many factors, but USBC Collegiate Manager Gary Brown thinks it is largely due to the financial benefits experienced by both schools and bowlers.

“Of the 25 new schools we have added this season, just about half offer at least some form of financial assistance to bowlers,” Brown said. “The student-athletes and their parents definitely see that and want to take advantage of it. Collegiate bowling already offered the opportunity to pursue the sport they love and compete for team and individual national titles. Now, it can help them pay for their educations, too.

“For the schools, bowling costs very little in the way of equipment to buy and facilities to use and maintain, and it boosts enrollment by allowing these schools to tap into the huge number of high school bowlers across the country. It’s a win-win situation for them. I think that’s why we’ve seen this huge spike this year and why we already have schools expressing interest in starting new teams in 2010 and 2011.”

Heidi Sanders had an outstanding tournament and finished 3rd overall to make the All Tournament team with a 204 average for her 9 games.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Sectional and national finals sites have been determined for the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships.

This year’s sectional competitions will be held March 13-14 in the following locations: South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, Las Vegas; Holiday Bowl Brainerd, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Landmark Lanes, Peoria, Ill., and AMF Parkway Lanes, Allentown, Pa.

The top four men’s and top four women’s teams from each sectional site will advance to the 2010 Intercollegiate Team Championships national finals, which will be held on specially-constructed lanes at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center in El Paso, Texas, April 14-17.
The El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center also will serve as the host site for the 2010 USBC Women’s Championships, USBC Queens and Bowling’s Clash of Champions.

This year will mark the first time the national finals have been held in an arena setting from start to finish. In 1998, Bowl-A-Vard Lanes hosted qualifying and match play before the tournament transitioned to the University of Wisconsin Field House in Madison, Wis., for the championship matches.

“It’s very exciting that we’ll be able to give all of these teams the opportunity to bowl in a world-class, arena setting like the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center,” USBC Collegiate Manager Gary Brown said. “It will be a terrific venue for this year’s tournament, one that competitors and fans are sure to enjoy.”

Intercollegiate Team Championships competition is conducted using the Baker format, which features five bowlers combining their efforts to bowl one team game. The lead-off bowler on each team bowls frames one and six. The second bowler bowls frames two and seven, and so on down the line.

Tournament competition will start with 32 games to establish seeds. Once the seeding process is completed, teams will begin five rounds of double-elimination, best-of-seven match play. Four teams will remain after the completion of round five. Those four teams will advance to the semifinals.

The semifinal winners will advance to the championship round, which will be a best-of-three match that is taped for television and will air nationally on ESPN2 May 5.

“The Intercollegiate Team Championships is an outstanding national championship event, and this year’s competition will be made even more exciting because of the outstanding venue it will be contested in,” Brown said. “We hope to see a lot of local support from the bowling fans in El Paso because watching this great competition will be something they won’t soon forget.”

Ryan was close behind with a 4th place finish. Other top finishers were Ryan Wolfe in 7th and Ricky Brown in 8th. A very good showing by the Dayton area contingent.
In the season’s initial JTBA in Bowling Green, Ryan Dobie had a great tournament and finished 2nd to good friend Bruce Ream. Chris Via continued his hot summer with a very solid 4th place finish. On the girls side, Nicole Mosesso finished 5th and Torrie Decker finished 6th.
We completed our 3rd annual bowling clinic last weekend and raised $900 for the program. We wish to thank the many coaches who helped out in this event. Our coach to student ratio was a phenomenal 1 to 3 and everyone was very pleased with his/her improvement.
The Wright State Bowling program is pleased to announce that we have been chosen to receive a ball sponsorship from Roto Grip for this season. We were one of 8 programs throughout the country that was chosen. This is a very big honor and speaks highly of how far we have come.
Finally, just a reminder that tryouts are coming up soon and our schedule for the season is up on the website.

Pennsylvania Student Awarded USBC Annual ZEB Scholarship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Elizabeth Donahoe of Ardsley, Pa., has been named the winner of the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Annual Zeb Scholarship.

The Zeb Scholarship is awarded to a USBC Youth member who achieves academic success and gives back to the community through service. Started in 2005, the award is named for Jim Zebehazy, who served as the executive director of the Young American Bowling Alliance from October 1996 through December 2004.

“I have always excelled in academics, participated in after-school activities, and volunteered to help better my community,” Donahoe said. “I needed a sport to help keep me active and also to experience the athletic side of life. It was gratifying to find a team-oriented sport where I could truly enjoy myself.

“Bowling has been so much fun and I value the bond that my team has created. A supportive environment where I can enjoy myself and also keep fit was exactly what I was looking for. Receiving the Zeb Scholarship is such an honor for me. I am thrilled about being the recipient this year.”

Donahoe will receive a $2,500 scholarship, which will be managed through the USBC’s SMART Program. The scholarship will be formally presented at the USBC Junior Gold Championships award presentation July 17 in Indianapolis.

This past summer, Donahoe traveled to Nicaragua, through the Building with Books program at her high school, to help build a school in a small village. In her applicant essay, Donahoe described the life of her Nicaraguan family, saying it “showed me material things do not matter. Even though they have a mud house with mud floors, they have the biggest hearts and welcomed us into their close-knit family.”

Donahoe will graduate from Abington Senior High School next month. She is a National Honor Society member and has a 4.395 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. She earned the Gold Award, the highest national honor given by the Girl Scouts of America, for putting together an event to help women with young children entering the workforce. The event included breakfast and lunch, motivational speakers, a workshop on resume writing, and a session on skills needed in an interview.

She has bowled in the Saturday morning Juniors league at Thunderbird Lanes in Willow
Grove, Pa., the past four seasons.

Annual Zeb Scholarship Award Winners
2005 Katelyn Spangler, Renton, Wash.
2006 Nicole Miller, Petaluma, Calif.
2007 Jacob Greene, Oilton, Okla.
2008 Natalie Demarko, Brunswick, Ga.
2009 Elizabeth Donahoe, Ardsley, Pa.

We were treated like royalty. We arrived on Wednesday and checked into the hotel first. When the women opened their doors, it was like Christmas as each one received a brand new 3 ball tote from Storm. We then proceeded to Cherry Bowl to do ball check ins. Once each lady checked in her max of 5 bowling balls for the tournament, we were required to leave them in the paddock area or on the lanes for the whole tournament. All surface changes and ball spinning had to be done in the center.

Wednesday evening we attended the banquet of Champions dinner and had a great time being in the same room as the premier programs. On Thursday we bowled 32 games of baker to determine our seeding for the four out of seven double elimination matches. As coaches, our plan was to balance our place with getting everyone experience on the pattern. We finished qualifying in 13th place, but we were pleased with our performance.

On Friday, our women bowled the 4th seed, Robert Morris College. After losing the first game, we stepped up big time and won 4 of the next 5 to win 4-2. Considering that all we heard was how the first time for teams is normally a two and out, we were stoked with our upset. We were the lowest ranked team to win the first round. We then bowled Lindewood and lost a heartbreaking first game by 2 pins. This seemed to take the wind out of our sails as we lost 4-0. Of course considering Lindenwood ended up bowling in the championship match, we lost to a very strong team. We then bowled Erie Community College (the junior college champions this season) and lost a couple of close games in a 4-1 match. With our 1-2 record, we finished in the 9-12 spot which we consider a very successful first appearance. We returned on Saturday to watch the TV finals so we could experience the scene and be prepared when it is our turn to be there!

We are very proud of our women and our men this season. For only our 4th year as a program, we had an outstanding season. Our men finished 18th in the season ending writer’s poll and the women finished 15th. We have never had both teams finish in the top 20. In the coaches poll, the men were just out of the top 20 and the women finished 12th. The men won the conference championship for their first tournament win in 4 years and the women won two tournaments which were also their first ones. Considering we are only losing one senior on the men’s side and one on the women’s side along with the quality of our incoming freshmen, the sky is the limit.

In addition, we would like to thank Beaver Vu and Poelking Woodman for all the support they have provided to our program. We also wish to thank the parents for their unending support with food, snacks, driving and morale. We could not have done it without you!!

Finally, don’t forget about our Junior Traveling League that starts on May 6th and our MyBowlingCoach.com clinic that will be on August 15th and 16th. Information for both of these can be found on our website at www.raidersbowling.com.

The Wright State men and women completed their regular season play at the toughest and largest tournament of the season – The Hoosier.

Our teams bowled 3 games on 3 different patterns and because this was a Tier 1 tournament, our kids had to adjust using only 5 bowling balls each. Our men fought hard against the best 52 teams in the country and finished 22nd, but were less than 200 pins out of 10th.

The men finished the regular season ranked 18th out of 140 men’s programs. The women finished 11th out of 28 teams and received the last $300 check by 2 pins. We worked very hard in the second part of the last game and the effort paid off. Our women finished the regular season ranked 16th out of 73 schools.

Both teams will be heading to the Fairview Heights sectional where we expect to be a contender for one of the four national spots up for grabs.

Wright State University was added to the history books of the “American Heartland Conference” yesterday when two of their three men’s teams defeated 24 other teams in baker style match play, leaving only two WSU teams standing.

It took beating last years conference champion (Grand Valley State) twice, Saginaw Valley State (3 time national champion, 5 time conference champion and currently ranked 3rd in the country) four times, and our rival Ohio State University two times, to get the job done.

The coaching staff made the decision not to bowl our two teams against each other in a final match, but just to come home as one victorious team. The men are currently ranked 15th and the girls 13th in the country (collegebowling.com). The Raider’s will travel to Indianapolis in two weeks for their final T-1 tournament of the year. From there, they will prepare for sectional competition in March,(location to be announced).

It’s there they compete with the top 64 ranked teams in the country, striving to be one of the elite 16 teams that will advance to the USBC Intercollegiate Bowling Championship finals to be held in Rockford, IL, April 15-18.

Earnest ready to lead Junior Team USA in El Salvador

ARLINGTON, Texas – With a relatively inexperienced crop of Junior Team USA bowlers representing the United States at the 2008 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championships, Josie Earnest of Vandalia, Ill., is convinced communication will determine the team’s fate.

Earnest leads a group of four girls who will be joined by four boys as Junior Team USA will take on other youth bowlers from across the American Zone in San Salvador, El Salvador, from Sept. 21-26.

Relying on her experience as a three-time Junior Team USA member and her two years as a collegiate bowler at Vanderbilt, Earnest will help guide Junior Team USA newcomers Kristie Petravich of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Christine Bator of Warren, Mich., as well as 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jenny Brown of DeLand, Fla.
“I think it will be important for me to take a leadership role because of my experience not only with Team USA but also with college bowling,” said Earnest, who helped lead Vanderbilt to the NCAA championship as a freshman in 2007. “These tournaments are very much team oriented and it is key to be able to communicate with one another. After being on this team for three years and being in college bowling for two years now, you learn very quickly how to communicate with people. I think that will be the key for us.”

In order to comply with age restrictions for the event, four bowlers who earned spots on Junior Team USA 2009 will compete. Petravich, Bator, Daniel Spink of Florissant, Mo., and Brent Bowers of Mulvane, Kan., were all selected to compete in El Salvador following their performances at the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships in suburban Detroit in July.

Spink and Bowers are joined on the boys side by Junior Team USA 2008 members Geoffrey Young of Denton, Texas, and John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y.

The PABCON Youth Championships (formerly American Zone Youth Championships) consist of competition in singles, doubles, trios, team, all-events and Masters. Junior Team USA will look to improve upon its performance at the 2006 PABCON Youth Championships in which it took home gold medals in boys singles, boys team, boys all-events and girls doubles en route to eight medals overall.
